Mary Queen of Scots was held captive at Carlisle Castle in 1568, on the orders of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. Today you can visit the tower where she spent her days and see the area in front of the castle where she was allowed to exercise.

You can also visit the Warden’s Apartments, where another Royal figure stayed - Richard III, King of England.

And don’t miss the Captain’s Tower - one of the best preserved gatehouses in the country.
