Woodhorn Colliery opened in 1894 and closed in 1981. At its peak, over 2,000 people worked underground at the site, mining 600,000 tonnes of coal every year.

Today the colliery buildings form a mining museum, with displays including photographs from the mine and the local area. You can see paintings by the ‘Pitmen Painters’ showing scenes from the 1930s, and colliery banners that were used to represent local miners in parades.

There is a shop and cafe, as well as a children’s play area and grounds to explore.

Facilities include disabled toilets, a Changing Places toilet and a baby-changing area.
